Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

There is some compelling evidence that carpal tunnel syndrome may be more common in people who use their hands for strenuous, repetitive tasks (dental hygienists, office or skilled labor jobs, tennis players, golfers, and even knitters) as well as among those making extensive use of vibrating tools. Contrary to popular belief, little evidence suggests that repetitive typing and keyboard use may be a contributing factor. Recent research has actually shown that a certain level of typing may actually be beneficial in preventing carpal tunnel.

Medical management for carpal tunnel usually consists of prescribing NSAIDs. This class of pharmaceuticals has been known to cause stomach bleeding, peptic ulcers, and kidney failure, as well as high blood pressure. If the NSAIDs are not effective, orthopedic surgeons may perform an operation that cuts the transverse carpal ligament in half to alleviate the pressure. This surgery has an alarmingly high failure rate.

A chiropractor knows that if your hands have pain and tingling, the first place to look is your neck, specifically in the mid to lower cervical spine. This is where the nerve roots which make up the brachial plexus originate. The brachial plexus is divided into nerves including the median and ulnar nerve, which travel all the way to the tips of the fingers. Nerve root irritation can occur at numerous places between the vertebra of the neck and the wrist, which can lead to many secondary complications. When a chiropractor adjusts the neck and removes the irritation at the nerve roots, the secondary or downstream symptoms may simply resolve. This is not only a more conservative approach, but also has a higher success rate than surgery for carpal tunnel.

Stress

Three main factors can cause misalignments in the spine resulting in nerve interference: thoughts, traumas, and toxins. Thoughts are the most common causes of spinal misalignments. People suffer from a range of emotional, relationship, and financial issues, and unfortunately they are not entirely escapable.

In the 1950s, Dr. Selye studied the effect of stress on the human body and presented his work to the world in the concept of the “General Adaptation Syndrome,” for which he won the 1964 Nobel Prize. This was a revolutionary concept of mental and physical illness and it was, at the time, acclaimed as the most important and far-reaching idea in the history of medicine: the idea that stress is the cause of all disease.

The longer we are under stress, the more our immune system is weakened. Stress releases a chemical called cortisol, which in excess can cause an array of problems.

One of the best ways to reduce stress is through chiropractic adjustments. Chiropractors are trained to remove you from one of the most severe stressors of all: the subluxation (or nerve interference). Subluxation is common and can even be painless, but it can exacerbate physical and emotional stress. As chiropractors begin to remove these subluxations the body begins to heal and adapt to the environment instead of being stuck in the same chronic state. Many research studies have linked the chiropractic adjustment to increasing one’s state of well-being on an emotional level. I want to start off by saying I cannot tell you how many people I have met that lead very healthy lives for the most part and just don’t understand why they still get sick or are still in pain. There are 5 pillars of health…the average person does about 2 of them and most healthy people do about 3-4 of them. Now I want to ask you a question. Exercise
Depending on your age you should be getting at least 20 minutes of cardio exercise 5 days a week. I am not saying you need to get out there and do cross-fit 8 days a week. Humans have 2 feet and we were meant to walk. If you want to start by walking 20 minutes a day that is wonderful and a great place to start!

Sleep
Get 7-8 hours of sleep every night. You should be sleeping on your back or on your side with a pillow in between your knees and a pillow that keeps your head level with your spine. No stomach sleeping!

Proper Mental Attitude
I cannot stress the importance of this one enough. Negative attitudes and a negative outlook on life are literally killing people. You need to do your best to keep a positive outlook on life on a day to day basis. Yes, stuff happens and it is OK to get sad, depressed or have anxiety in certain situations. These feelings are normal and good to have every now and then but overall you need to keep a happy outlook on life. Let me give you an example. Two 12 year old boys are diagnosed with a life threatening cancer. The doctor tells them they have two weeks to live. One of the boys get very sad and discouraged and dies in two weeks. The other boy says I am way too young for this and there is no way I am going to let this cancer beat me. He rises above it and is still living to this day cancer free. The only difference was their mental attitude on the situation.

Eating Healthy
I am not going to get into what you should or shouldn’t eat because most people have a good idea of that already and if you need help in this area there are millions of trained professionals out there. One question I do want to ask you is if the nerves going to your stomach and intestines are not working the correct way how do you think you might be digesting your food? Maybe you are taking top of the line supplements and buying all natural organic food from Whole Foods or Alfalfa’s. What if you are wasting your money because your body is not capable of absorbing the nutrients the right way do to an improperly functioning nervous system? Think about it…
